Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Disorders
In Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or hypermobility disorders, the most reported symptom is orthostatic intolerance. Other symptoms may include brain fog or problems with concentration, gastrointestinal issues and fatigue. The two most common orthostatic intolerances are Orthostatic Hypotension – low blood pressure being upright and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) – an abnormal increase in heart rate that occurs after sitting upright or standing.
Dysautonomia refers to a group of disorders that affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls bodily processes that we do without thinking. These include respiration, heart rate, temperature regulation, digestion and blood pressure.
Symptoms we commonly treat by retraining the ANS include breathing, posture and sensory re-education:
- Lightheadedness or off balance
- Vision changes: blurred, eye strain, temporary vision loss
- Gastrointestinal issues, nausea or difficulty eating
- Fainting
- 'Brain Fog’ or poor memory or limited concentration
- Tachycardia or rapid hear rate, chest tightness or tension
- Muscle tremors or body shakes
- Sleep disturbance
- Sweaty arms, hands or legs
- Body temperature dysregulation
One morning I woke up with severe burning in my eye. I then lost vision in my right eye for 3 weeks. I was scared. I didn’t know what was going on. I could not feel the ground under my feet. My foot felt like it was floating. After a 5-hour MRI and multiple scans and tests, the doctors stated could possibly have early onset multiple sclerosis.
Everything changed coming to Taylor Creek PT. After my first appointment, Kristi gave me a temporary appliance for my teeth because I’m a clencher. I was able to take it home with me and needed to use it with my home exercises. In the past, I had tried everything recommended to me and there were no results. This was the first time I had a glimpse of hope after my first appointment at Taylor Creek. I could walk. I could feel the floor. I had my balance back. The pressure in my head and eye went away – as long I was using my temporary appliance and followed the home exercise plan.
I honestly feared I was going to lose my passions in life. I am now able to function like a normal 26-year-old. I hate to think what life could have been if I had not found Taylor Creek. I’m able to live my life to the fullest and enjoy everyday pain free. "
When I started therapy at Taylor Creek PT, it was the first time real change happened. I learned how to breathe, how posture and positioning affected my symptoms, and how strengthening specific muscles in my legs and core supported my nervous system. The attacks became shorter, less intense, and eventually stopped.
I've now been two years attack-free. I'm back in school, singing in choir, golfing, and living fully again. Taylor Creek PT didn't just manage my symptoms - it gave me my life back.
